The fourth quarter starts with eight unanswered points, only this time the streak belongs to the Cowgirls. Hardin trails by two.

Coach Mac is livid. How can this team be so inconsistent? Back when her teams won three games a year and her ulcer was devouring her stomach, she looked at coaches with winning programs and imagined how smooth life might be. Yet now, with her team leading the league and ranked number one, she feels like crap, doubling over at the waist, a pain shooting through her stomach.

With 2:12 to play, Tiffany sinks two free throws and Hardin is up by three. Then Miles City turns it over.

“Smart passes!” yells Coach Mac.

Anita passes it right to a defender.

“Don’t foul!” yells Coach Mac.

Owena fouls.

The free throw is missed and Sharon rebounds.

“Don’t shoot!” yells Coach Mac.

DyAnna casts off from 18 feet.

Coach Mac slams down her towel. This can’t be happening. It’s almost as if the team purposefully disregards everything she says.

With 26 seconds remaining, Wambolt misses a jumper and Sharon grabs the rebound and is fouled. She knows the numbers—math is her best subject—two free throws ice the game. She also knows that this is the third game in a row that she’s been to the line in the final seconds with a chance to sew up a victory. The first two times she missed. This time she swishes both shots, clinching the victory 55–50.

Hardin now leads the conference by two games, and with conference play at the halfway point, they are 9-1, their grip on number one secure. For the night, Tiffany and Anita each score 15, Sharon a game-high 21. With the exception of the first minute, she played the entire game.

Amy never got back in the game.
