Chapter 12

Becker goes for a jog as soon as we get back. At nearly midnight he returns and says he’s going to check the perimeter of the house. I wave him along with little attention.

I lay out all the clues I have so far on Becker’s bed, which isn’t much. My wet hair drips down the ratty Angel’s PD T-shirt I borrowed from Becker’s drawer, leaving my shoulders and back a little damp. I switch the phone from one ear to the other.

“Purple Lavenglove. Morose. Sweet Pickles.” Ali lists off each ingredient.

I check my list from Sixth Level of Hell. “No. I don’t see any of those. Are they ones you’ve traced from the spell?”

“Oh hey, sorry, Kate. I’m trying to get Dalia to try these little finger sandwiches I made.” She grunts. “I said sandwich. Not sand bitch. My food doesn’t taste like sand and between you and me…well, let’s just say technically I’m not the bitch. Goddess, I thought werewolves could hear from ten blocks away. And it has pickles? When have you gone more than three hours without horking down a pickle or two?” She mutters. “Kate, this wolf. I swear.”

I sigh. “Have you worked on the spell at all while she’s been there? Tell her to come back if she’s going to keep you from the assignment.”

Technically we didn’t really need to keep up the illusion that Ali was vacationing, now that Goya knew, but I also didn’t want to leave Ali wide open for him to casually bump into her and ignore Becker’s request to stay away for the time being.

“Oh, hey, no, we’re cool. Right, Dally?” There’s a pause. “She loves me, she just doesn’t know how to show it.” She lowers her voice. “I’ve switched tactics. Instead of being nice, I’m giving her total attitude. So far, it’s working.” She yells, “Oh yeah? You be nice first! I’d rather be giving you a back rub for your pulled muscle, or whatever, but instead I’m stuck tracing a spell and putting up with your mood.”

“Okay, so back to the spell. Have you gotten any further on it?”

“No, not really. My assistant is distracted with every groan of his baby mama. We were watching a movie and she got up to grab another bowl of popcorn and she tweaked her back. Now he’s rubbing it for her. All that because she didn’t want me to touch the bowl.”

I press my finger to the bridge of my nose. “I’m going to list off a few ingredients to you and you tell me if any of them stick out to you.”

I move through the list.

She stops me. “Tongkat Ali?” She snorts. “I have a drug with my name in it. That’s pretty awesome.”

“I know. It’s some kind of sex drug.”

“Very appropriate for my namesake.”

“Apparently some lady buys it in bulk.”

“Must be a Predictions actuary.” She giggles.

“Funny.” I continue calling out from the list.

“Most of these I’m going to have to look up. Rare and obscure aren’t my specialty.
