Chapter 15
âI donât think the Lord could have given us a prettier day,â said Ethel as she focused on the road ahead. âWe should be doing something fun, something that doesnât involve crime solving.â She had tried her best to suggest anything but where they were headed, but Velma ignored her, keeping her attention on the phone.
Ethel sighed. âDid you hear me?â
âI hear you, but Iâm ignoring the fact that youâre being Debbie Downer.â
âIâm not sure we should be doing this, Velma. Braxton had a point: whoever killed Randy sent a message. I donât want us to end up the next old, dead crows.â
Velma turned the phone off and stuffed it in her purse. âI think I know how the killer did it. Randy was in his office minding his own business when someone killed him and stuffed him out the window. Thatâs why the window was wiped clean like the dumpster.â
âWell, like I meant earlier, the cops arenât going to leave blood,â said Ethel, making a sour face.
âOf course not, Ethel. And thatâs my point. You heard Riley. He said there was blood evidence at the scene. Now, itâs common knowledge that there would have been blood where Randy fell. It doesnât take Sherlock Holmes to know that, so thatâs already implied, but I donât think thatâs the scene they were talking about. I think they meant the office, where blood wasnât expected. They cleaned up the blood evidence, and left the bird shit? I donât think so. I think the killer cleaned it up before the bird flew in, which happened after the blood was cleaned up and the window was left open to make it look like Randy jumped.â
âThen how did the cops find it?â
âLuminol. It will show them where the blood was. The must have found trace blood evidence inside the office.â
âSo whatâs that got to do with Mayor Sheffield?â
Velma sighed, wondering if Ethel had even been paying attention. âHe was the last person who met with Randy! Which means heâs most likely the one who pushed him out the window. But not only that, Ethel. The day we were in his office, he had one of those pens. Maybe he used it to write the ransom note and then put it in his pocket. People steal pens all the time.â
âWow. I canât believe you got all that just from one visit,â said Ethel.
âJust like Sherlock Holmes, Ethel, all it takes is a little bit of observation and deduction.â
When they arrived in the new part of Bliss, where the streets were much nicer, and the flowers were so plenty they almost masked the rotten egg smell from the nearby paper mill, Ethel tried one more time. âCanât we just go home, Velma? I need to take Miss Vicky for a walk.â
âMiss Vicky isnât a damn dog, Ethel, and weâre already here.â She pointed to the building as Ethel turned in to the lot out front.
âItâs not too late to turn back and go home and let the good officers of Bliss do their job.
