CHAPTER 12

I grabbed my coat and bag from upstairs and decided to walk on over to Sabrina’s shop. I’d promised Digby’s ghost that I’d dedicate sometime today trying to figure out what his dryad soulmate needed for this magical ritual of theirs. That which can make one into two. That which can make one into two. Just what the heck is it?!

Just before I left Hermes came into the kitchen. “Off to earn another day of sweat on your brow?” he asked and went over to his bowl. He immediately started scoffing food.

“I’m going to try and make some progress with this dryad problem. Hermes, do we have any books in the apartment that could help me learn more about dryads?”

“Nah, probably not,” he said without even looking up from his dish.

“Great. So helpful. Thanks.” With that I left the apartment. Fifteen minutes later I arrived at Sabrina’s shop and I found her upstairs, unloading a box of black candles onto a shelf.

She turned and looked at me in surprise. “I wasn’t expecting to see you today!” she said with a smile.

“I thought I’d try and work on this dryad mystery a little. I figured something in your shop might point me to an answer.”

“Ah yes…what did she need again? That which can make one into two. Maybe it’s a pen?” Sabrina guessed.

“A pen?” I asked.

“Yeah, like… if you added a curve to the top and a line across the bottom, you could make a number one kind of look like a two…” She stared ahead for a moment before she carried on unloading candles. “I’ll leave the mystery solving to you.”

“For what it’s worth she said she also needed copper and turquoise.”

“Now that I can help you with. I have those things in abundance.” Sabrina looked at one of the candle’s she was holding. “Want one of these by any chance?”

“A candle? Sure. One can never have enough candles.”

“They’re not just ordinary candles, they’re magical. Once you light one of these things it’ll make all eggs taste like chocolate—as long as the candle is burning of course, and in the same room as you.”

“…Why?” I said after staring at her for a long hard moment.

“Why do I have them? Because some genius at ‘Proctor & Goldhart Enchantments’ messed up while making enchanted candles. They were meant to be divination candles but came out wrong. I just picked up five hundred of these babies for a steal!”

“You think people will buy something like that?” I asked in surprise.

“Zora my entire business is built off the back of buying this type of random nonsense. People mess up all the time when making magical objects. I swoop in, buy it all for cheap and sell it on at a premium to bored witches looking for something fun to do with their evening.” Sabrina threw a candle my way and I caught it. “Take one, it’s on the house!”

“I’m not a massive fan of egg…” I said as I put the candle into my bag.
