CHAPTER SEVEN
âIâm so sorry,â Maggie said. She fussed with the food carrier while Brett took a seat behind his desk. âI just wanted to bring something hot for you to eat for dinner.â
âYou have nothing to apologize for,â he told her. âAnd you have no idea how much I appreciate dinner.â
âOkay, but I interrupted your interview, and my presence apparently stirred something up in those two.â
âThe interview wasnât going anywhere even before you showed up,â Brett said. âI donât know what to make of those two.â
âWhat do you mean?â Maggie asked.
Brett shook his head and accepted a plate of food from her. âThis smells so good,â he said, then sighed. âThese women come in here demanding to know what weâre doing about their relativeâs murder. I filled them in on what has been going on, but that isnât good enough for them.â
âI hate to say it, but that doesnât sound too unusual. Youâve certainly dealt with demanding questions before,â Maggie pointed out.
âYeah, but the second I start to dig in a little deeper and ask them questions that might help with the investigation, they both shut down,â he said. âThey keep insisting that this all has to do with their grandmother and Ruby stealing her recipes.â
âBut they wonât answer the rest of your questions?â
âNope,â Brett said. âThe truth of the matter is, they behaved like they wanted to block me at every turn. They seem to have already made up their minds about what happened to Sarah Beth.â
After they ate, Maggie left the rest of the food at the office with him. He promised to be home as soon as he could, but the possibility of state police swooping down on him over the investigation meant more hours and time in the office, making sure everything was in order and simple for them to understand.
Back home, Maggie picked her phone up and browsed through her messages, looking for anything more from Ruby. It disturbed her that her best friend was taking the accusations of a stranger so hard. It disturbed her even more that the family members of a dead woman insisted that Ruby was somehow responsible for the death. They had even suggested Maggie herself might be the killer. Why were they so quick to assume the murder had anything to do with either of them?
Maggie decided to call Ruby and check in on her. She had a feeling that she might be feeling down again. The phone rang and went to voicemail before she picked up. Maggie decided not to leave a message but sent her a text instead.
âI wanted to check in on you and make sure that youâre doing alright,â Maggie wrote.
Ruby called a moment later. âIâm sorry,â she said as soon as Maggie picked up the phone. âI was downstairs looking through things again.â
âWhy?â Maggie asked. âDid something happen?â
âI was still searching for any mention of Laura Beth Swenson,â Ruby admitted.
âBut why?â Maggie asked. âSurely youâre not convinced that you might have accidentally committed plagiarism?â
âI donât know what I am,â Ruby said.
