Chapter Sixteen

“What the fuck are you doing?” Cedric asked on a harsh whisper.

Andrew growled, turned and headed to the kitchen. He bent over, opened the cabinet underneath the sink, and pulled out a bottle of scotch. He opened the top, and poured a healthy amount down his throat.

“Please tell me you didn’t just fuck up?” Cedric queried his voice lowered so only Andrew could hear him.

Andrew didn’t reply, though. He walked past Cedric and headed back into the living room. When Cedric followed he found Nyla was standing by the front door, her sleeping daughter still in her arms, their bags at her feet.

The sight of her standing there, angry and hurting caused Andrew’s heart to crack. He knew he should do everything he could to get her to stay, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Call it stubbornness, call it being an idiot. The thing was, he wanted the decision to stay to be hers. He could persuade her with no problem. He could tell her to stay here and he’d go stay somewhere else to give her the space she needed. But, he didn’t want to talk her into it. He loved her, there was no doubt about that. But he needed to stay true to himself.

He was the alpha of this pack. He lived on having control of all things, no matter what. His pack needed to see him execute that control and most of all discipline. Admitting weakness could have irreparable consequences for both him and Nyla. And even the small amount of insolence by Nyla couldn’t be tolerated, especially in front of his pack. Nyla didn’t understand how his world worked, which he understood. But if she wasn’t willing to stay here and learn, then it was best for her to go. Andrew needed Nyla to trust him in all things. Maybe having blind trust was asking for too much from her, however he wouldn’t back down from his beliefs. He needed this from her and until she could give it wholeheartedly, she needed to go. No way could he be with a woman who wouldn’t let him lead.

Cedric noticed he wasn’t getting anywhere with Andrew. He decided to try his luck with Nyla.

“Nyla, I can see that my brother is being an asshole. Don’t let him run you off. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to leave right now. Not while we are still trying to figure out who broke into your apartment and why you were targeted today.”

Nyla looked at Cedric then turned her gaze to Andrew. She remained quiet keeping her ice-cold eyes on his brother.

Fuck… Help me here, you dumbass, Cedric barked to Andrew. When he didn’t get a reply, he decided it would be best to work on Nyla. At least one of them had to be a bigger person here and he hoped it would be her.

“Listen, Nyla, we want you two to be safe. Why don’t you stay until we figure out what’s going on? You don’t have to stay with this douche bag if you don’t want to.
