Chapter 9

“I don’t know what you mean.” Daysha denied. “Nothing happened, I just decided to grow up.”

“So this is not about the letter from the parole board regarding your father?”

“What the? How the?” He sat down and picked his mug back up. But she didn’t have the same control he mastered. She slammed hers down in the sink. What an arrogant ass. She wanted to smack him off the stool. “What the hell? Have you been going through my mail?”

Unrepentant eyes gripped hers, “yes.” He copied her earlier shrug but added an arrogant arched brow to the gesture. “When you didn’t respond to the housing request from your father, they called me to verify your employment. I wouldn’t be much of an investigator if I couldn’t figure out what was going on after that. Your long-lost daddy decided to get unlost when he’s up for parole. And he needs a relative to house him. Since you’re the only relative he has, they came looking for you. But you passed.” He held his hand up to stop her protest. “I understand why, and I even agree. You don’t owe him a thing after he walked out of you and your mom twenty years ago.” A brief flash of hurt skittered across his eyes so quick she almost missed it. “But what I don’t understand is why you didn’t feel you could talk to me about it. I’ve been waiting, ready to be that shoulder for you to lean on if you needed it. But instead of turning to me, you went looking for a stranger.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Then how was it?” The hurt seeped out again before a sheet of ice contained it. “Because from here it looks like you were looking for someone to use. And the sad part is I don’t think you wanted to use him for sex. He was just someone convenient to hide behind. You wanted to make an epic mistake, a bunch of mountain high mistakes. So that you’d be so busy fixing them you don’t have to sit down and deal with the real problem.”

“I’m not hiding behind any mistakes.”

“No, you’re not. Because I am not a mistake. But it’s not for lack of trying.” The sudden blizzard that had blown into the room freezing everything, waned. The sun came and thawed the warmth back into his eyes. His hands were warm shelters when they covered hers. “I’ve watched you grow from a young woman whose world cracked and split in half when her mom died to the woman you are today. You had the strength and confidence to pull your world back together, reshape it and build your life. You are a warrior. I’ve never had to save you because you always saved yourself. You give me too much credit for giving you that first job. If it hadn’t been me, it would have been some other lucky as hell employer. Because nothing was going to stop you.” His hand caressed the side of her cheek, spreading that warmth into a glow that lit her inside.
