You can see here how a small blob of colour can be extended with gel for reasons of economy. The gel dries clear, so that the colours retain their tone.

Building texture with regular gel

Regular gel is heavier than soft gel and has the exact consistency of the heavy body paints. It is great for adding to these paints to volumize them for impasto applications or for making a textured ground prior to painting.

Field of Irises

40.5 x 40.5 cm (16 x 16 in)

Once my underpainting of Naples Yellow dried, I painted the sky with a mixture of Phthalo Blue and Titanium White. I used light green to suggest the foliage of the irises, and a mixture of Dioxazine Purple, magenta and white for the flower heads. A mix of Dioxazine Purple and Cadmium Yellow provided all the dark tones within the field and for the mass of trees. Using a palette knife and mixing the paints with copious amounts of regular gel give the painting its impasto style and spontaneous and lively appearance.
