Harold texted this morning, asking if Becca and I would join him for brunch. I happily accepted. Besides finally getting some time with my godfather, it is the perfect opportunity to ask him some of the questions floating around my head.

We meet him at Moonflower Café, a small coffee shop across the street from my catering business. It sits at the end of a shopping center featuring an interior design business and a hair salon. When Becca and I enter, it is no surprise that most customers are women. Plus, they have an area where you can buy gifts for coffee lovers.

I offered to drive Harold, but he said he had other things to do beforehand. He is already sitting at a table with a cup of coffee when my daughter and I reach him. He stands and gives each of us a hug. I can feel the bones through his suit. He’s lost weight since he first arrived.

“Are you eating enough? Molly said you hadn’t joined them for a meal since you arrived,” I ask. Menus are behind a napkin dispenser, and I pull two out, handing one to Becca.

“Yes, I’m eating. Just not the delicious meals your aunt makes.” He looks at the menu sitting in front of him.

The waitress appears, and we give our orders. Since I’m not a coffee drinker, I often don’t come to the business. I’m very interested in trying their Eggs Benedict since I’m a huge fan of hollandaise sauce. It was one of the first things I mastered in culinary school.

Harold puts his menu back and looks at my daughter. “I heard someone reversed a curse yesterday.”

Becca goes into the retelling of how she reversed the curse on Molly’s statue. ”…and Cameron said he had no idea it was there,” Becca finishes telling him. Since the achievement, her self-esteem has improved. Even her everyday practicing of magic has gotten better.

“What happened with the young woman?” Harold asks.

“Rosa’s tracking down any family she may have left.” The waitress appears with our drinks, and I wait for her to leave before continuing. “It appears she was cursed during the 1950s by a witch she refused to marry. He placed her in his garden and visited her every day. When he passed, the family had no idea she had been turned into a bronze figure and sold her. From there, she’s been passed from one person to another until she ended up in Molly’s garden.”

“It’s a good thing Becca did the reversal.” Harold nods at my daughter. “She may never have gotten released. You’re a hero.”

Becca beams at his compliment. His eyes twinkle as he talks to her, but I can’t help but notice the darkness under them. Is he sleeping at all? Is this all because of the murder? I’ve heard that Brandon hasn’t brought him in for more questions. And I know other suspects are being interviewed. Yesterday, the rumor around the diner was that Douglas had gotten a black envelope. Maybe tonight, when Brandon comes to work on the shop, I will ask him if Harold is even still a suspect.
