Jackie was standing with her hands resting on the table as she leaned over the spread of papers Morales left. On autopilot, her eyes scanned the documents, pausing to read snippets here and there. Meanwhile, while Fannie and Claude worked to pin the maps and crime scene photos on the wall, Jackie finishing telling them about her disastrous visit from Morales.
“And that was it, she just left?”
“In a nutshell, yes,” she said. She raised her own eyebrows in response to Claude’s questioning look.
“She didn’t say any more about what this hell is that we’ve supposedly raised?” So far Fannie was taking everything in stride. Never one to get ruffled, if she was surprised at Jackie’s argument with Morales, she wasn’t showing any signs that she was perturbed by it.
“Nope. Her eyes were blazing, though, and she did give the front door a particularly loud slam.”
Fannie and Claude pinned the last of the crime scene pictures on the wall and the three women sat down together, looking over all the information before them.
“I don’t know how this could have been missed the first time around,” Claude said. “This is a huge amount of information. None of it showed up on the database, either.”
Fannie’s head was bent to the side, her face skeptical. “Are you suggesting someone deliberately hid it out of sight?”
“Yes. I am.” Claude hadn’t yet told her friends what she had unearthed during her nighttime sleuthing. Arriving at Jackie's at the same time as Fannie, they were in time to witness Morales’ spectacular exit. They had to step aside as she barreled past them without a word, got in her car with another slammed door, and burned rubber as she sped off down the street. Seeing the newly discovered documents made her feel relieved Morales was gone. “And that’s not even half of it,” she added.
Claude reached into her bag and retrieved the three file folders she had put together several hours earlier. She told her friends about the connections and links she had found that tied Ray Grant, Alan Chapman, Sarah Chapman, and Dale Shipley together.
“Jesus!” Jackie gasped. For once, she didn’t know what else to say.
Fannie had a thoughtful look on her face and folded her arms, holding her chin between her thumb and folded fingers. “Now we know why we haven’t been able to get a grasp on this case.”
“You’ve got that right,” Jackie said, finally finding her voice. “Someone, or maybe more than one, has deliberately prevented us from investigating this case. Well, screw them!”
“Did you get any sense why Morales said we had to solve this as fast as we can?”
“I did ask, though her answer was odd…but then we ended up head to head and I didn’t get the chance to ask her for more details before she walked out and almost broke my door. She said that they needed to know what, if any, role Ray Grant had in the murder. Oh, and she said that ‘things were at play’,” Jacked added as an afterthought.
