The next morning the rain had moved off to the east and the sun began drying things out. The group made themselves a hot breakfast before returning to the shack. Wonder was obviously not pleased with their return, but had the door open for them. Phillip led the way back down to the sub-basement and they resumed their search. As the hours drug on they found fewer and fewer things caught their attention. No longer did they pause to satisfy their curiosity. If it wasn’t what they were looking for, they quickly moved on. The discussion had just begun about when they should break for lunch when Dorca found something. She brought a stack of papers closer to the lantern and began reading through them.

“Find something interesting?” Phillip asked.

“Perhaps,” Dorca said, then looked up quickly. “I am sorry, this is not what you are looking for.”

“What is it then?” Jared asked.

“It is about the early history of my people, of the Tyboa tribe,” Dorca said. “The women were not always in control, at one point the tribe had a king.”

“Things have changed quite a lot,” Brittney said.

“I never knew any of this,” Dorca said. “There was a great revolt, many people died. When the fighting stopped a queen was crowned. Queen Emma was the first to separate men and women into different camps. She was the one who shaped the culture we know now.”

“And you knew none of this?” Phillip asked. “I would have thought the first queen would be famous, or at least infamous.”

“Our culture has never looked to the past,” Dorca said. “It never mattered how we got to the present, it was only important to maintain what we had.”

“I don’t know, I kinda like knowing where we came from, how we got where we are,” Jared said.

“It is fascinating,” Dorca said. “Many did not believe the new culture would work and fought against it for many generations. We were not always as peaceful as we like to believe.”

“Sorry you read it?” Soul asked.

Dorca shook her head. “Not at all,” she said. “Knowing the struggle gives me a better appreciation for what we have.”

“Well, what we don’t have is information on where the Phoenix nest is,” Jared said.

“Sorry, I will return to my search,” Dorca said.

The group finally paused for a brief lunch then returned to the dark corridors of the basement to resume their search. Once they finished one shelf they would begin on the next. No matter how many shelves they worked through, there always seemed to be more remaining than when they started. Fatigue was beginning to set in and Phillip worried that in their drowsiness they would overlook something. With them just quickly scanning the documents he knew it would be easy to overlook the piece of parchment they needed. He tried to focus and insisted on the others taking frequent breaks to go up and get fresh air. It seemed to help somewhat, but the dark working conditions and monotonous work was hard to overcome.
