PART III

Connecting Places, Connecting People: Making It Happen!

Our principal impediments at present are neither lack of energy or material resources nor of essential physical or biological knowledge. Our principal constraints are cultural.

(Marion King Hubbert, 1976)

Hubbert made the above comment while theorizing about ‘peak oil’ and its challenges. The core message remains valid for any discussion about making connections happen between places and people through urban reconfiguration. Urban reconfiguration is rendered ineffective unless there is a strong cultural shift, and the community embraces the interventions. A democratic decision-making and implementation process can assist in meeting the challenge of building broad-based support for and market acceptance of new urban forms, and green alternative modes of travel among an increasingly diverse group of stakeholders.

Bringing the people and place connections to fruition also depends on an accurate diagnosis of the connectivity attributes and a precise prognosis of the required actions.

This part of the book focuses on the two areas mentioned above. Together, these represent important methodological approaches and a connectivity audit framework that urban planning and related professions need to embrace in the quest to improve the quality and livability of places and the connectivity between them. It is thus centrally about implementation—putting the ideals of connecting places into practice over the coming decades and beyond.
