Following the previous section on general properties of band theory we continue this chapter by focusing on specific examples where the Dirac CIs appear. In fact, in this section, we do not include any lattice but consider free electrons. We argue how similar coupling terms like those found for JT models in molecules may arise in condensed matter systems. We also demonstrate how such intrinsic spin–orbit couplings give rise to the spin Hall effect.
