Andy called a few hours later to let her know that her nana was going to stay at the hospital with Put and Evie and that he was headed back to the scene.
“Do you think Chance is going to let you help with the investigation?”
“No, of course not, but I’m hoping he’ll let Mikey take my statement and maybe I can get him to spill the beans as to what they’ve found so far.”
“What’s going to happen to whoever did this?”
“I’m not sure, Q’Bita. Hopefully, Cane pulls through and it turns out this was all just an accident but we’ll have to wait and see, I guess.”
“You say that like there’s a possibility that this could have been something other than an accident. You don’t really think someone did this on purpose, do you?”
“I sure hope not, babe, but it seems mighty suspicious that someone messes with the ladder in Put’s barn and then a few days later this happens. It’s a long shot, but the cop in me says there might be something more going on here.”
“But who would want to hurt Cane? He doesn’t seem like a guy with many enemies.”
“That’s the part I’m struggling with. Cane and Put were wearing the same gear today. From a distance it would have been hard to tell which one was which, especially if their backs were to the shooter. When you factor in that the ladder was in Put’s barn, that leads me to question if the target was really Cane or it could have been Put.”
Q’Bita felt a rising panic. Put Newsome wasn’t exactly cuddly and well-liked. She had no problem imagining that the list of people with a grudge against him was as long as her arm, but what worried her most was the fact that the only person who’d recently threatened to kill Put was her own brother.
“You still there, babe?” Andy asked.
“Ya, sorry. Andy, please tell me you were with Beecher when this happened.”
The fact that Andy didn’t immediately answer filled her with dread.
“Q’Bita, don’t start panicking. I’m sure Beecher had nothing to do with this.”
“You weren’t with him, then?”
“No. When Beecher suggested that we all split up, Put and Cane took the creek bed and Jake Morgan, Orvis, and I took the upper ridge line. Beecher took the middle ground.”
“So Beecher was alone?”
“Ya, but like I said, I’m sure he had nothing to do with this, babe.”
“Of course not. I was just hoping there was someone who could vouch for him.”
After they hung up, Q’Bita tried to calm her nerves with a cup of tea but she couldn’t shake the feeling that things were about to go from bad to worse when her phone rang again.
“Hey, Jamie. What’s up?”
“Hey, Q’B-Doll. I’m down at the front desk and I need your help with something.”
“Sure. What can I do?”
“Well, if you can pull an extra room out of thin air, that would be a good start.”
“Sorry. I’m good but I’m not that good.
“I was afraid you’d say that.
