Conformational molecular rectifiers (CMR) of molecules attached to gold surfaces through their thiol groups are shown in Figure 2.42a and Figure 2.42b. These molecules are suitable for changing conformation once placed in a tunneling junction. Characteristic current-voltage plots of these molecules show significant rectification. In each examples shown in Figure 2.42, molecules are comprise of a dipolar rotating part whose orientations are dependent on electric field.
