Local attitudes to family, friends and others
Attitudes to the ‘work ethic’ are not consistent across the globe. There is also some evidence that newer generations in the industrialized West have a greater commitment to family, friends and the environment than perhaps their parents or grandparents did.
Generational shift:
A 2015 report from UBS[1] found that ‘Wealth is also a blessing and curse for families. While millionaires say they value family above all else, and their wealth is aimed at improving their lives, they also say they sacrificed too much time from family to make their wealth.’ Millionaires’ ‘biggest regrets relate to mistakes they made with spouses and family members’.
Bentley University in the USA surveyed over a thousand undergraduate Generation Y millennials and found that as few as 13% wanted to become a CEO or president of a company.
If you look at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) Better Life Index there is a massive difference between nations’ work–life balance, for example:
Denmark 9.8
Spain 9.3
Greece 7.1
United Kingdom 6.1
Poland 5.6
United States 5.3
Korea 2.5
Mexico 2.4

These figures are calculated on the basis of the number of hours spent in work in comparison to the number of hours spent in leisure activities (spending time with friends, family and sleeping). They only relate to people in full-time, paid employment, so are not skewed by full-time parents who might otherwise fall between stools. Though these figures may look extreme, the Danes have on average 16.1 hours of leisure time per day and the Mexicans have 13.9.
