Chapter 26
Erin had been up for a few hours when there was a light knock on her door. She looked over at it, wondering who would be up already. It was still pretty early in the morning for non-bakers. People who actually slept until after the sun came up. It was too early to be housekeeping. And she wasnât sure she wanted to talk with anyone who was associated with the contest.
She went to the door and looked out the peephole. It was difficult to make anything out. She eventually opened the door, unable to make out who it was through the fisheye lens.
âOh! Joshua.â Erin smiled and took the chain off the door. âWhat are you doing here?â She opened the door wide and motioned for him to join her.
âIâm covering the competition.â
Erin frowned, trying to make sense of what he was saying. âWhat do you mean, covering it?â
Joshua pulled a notepad out of his pocket and turned to a fresh page. He retrieved a pen from another pocket and held them up, poised to write. âI got an extra credit assignment. To report on the cooking competition. For English Language Arts.â
âOh, I see. Well, good for you.â Erin smiled.
Joshua hadnât been doing very well in school. Erin knew that Mary Lou had been worried about him. After Campbell, her older son, had dropped out, she had done everything within her power to make sure that Joshua stayed in school, even though she knew that she couldnât do anything if he decided that he too was done with school. An extra credit assignment would help to bring his marks up. And even more important than that, he was getting out there and making an effort to do something, instead of just hiding at home and not socializing or doing any extra-curricular activities. It was better for his mental health if he got out and did things.
âHave a seat,â Erin pointed toward the single chair in the room, pushed in at the table that doubled as a writing table and entertainment center. Erin sat on the bed. âSo, tell me about the assignment. What do you need to do?â
âCover everything. Get as many human interest stories as I can and hand them in to my teacher. Sheâs going to see if she can get some of them published in the paper if they are good enough. Just⦠being like a real reporter. Looking for the scoop.â
âAt an ice cream contest, there should be plenty of scoops.â Erin laughed.
âOh, you did not just say that. Iâm going to have to put in my article that you tell really bad jokes!â
âYouâre only supposed to write the truth.â
âThat would be the truth.â
âWhat have you reported on so far? I guess thereâs not much you can report on until the actual competition begins.â
âNo way. Thereâs plenty to report on. The science fair yesterday and today, thatâs good human interest stuff. Talking to people, reporting on what they are making and what interesting things I can find out about them.
