I read it aloud. Stephen actually groaned. âWhat has happened to him?â
I had no answer. âIf he can send a telegram, he is all right.â
âHow can you be so sure?â
âBecause this isnât Germany, itâs Canada.â I reached out and gripped his arm. âHe wonât be thrown in jail without a charge, I promise you.â
His eyes met mine. His were bleak. âI hope you are right, Charlotte.â
âLook, weâll have more privacy in the other room. Itâs that one right next to the counter. The door is unlocked. Why donât you go in. Iâll be right there.â
Stephen stood up. I couldnât help but notice he tucked his chin into his coat collar so that less of his face was visible. The gesture seemed automatic. He jammed his hat back on his head.
I made sure he had actually entered the room before I went to the kitchen. Pearl was coming through the swing door, and we almost collided.
âSorry, Pearl. I came to get the soups. Save you the bother.â
She was still not over what she perceived as my snub and, ungraciously, she handed over the tray.
âDo you want me to bring in the second course? Or will you be saving me the bother?â
âIâll come and get it, donât worry. We are going to be joined by Detective Murdoch, so you can send him in when he comes. He should be here shortly.â
That cheered her up. âDetective Murdoch? I havenât seen him for a while. Such a nice man.â
She turned to go back into the kitchen, then stopped. âDoes this mean youâre on another case, you and him?â
âItâs likely.â
I canât claim to understand the inner workings of dear Pearlâs mind, but she had been very decent when my last case had concluded in such sorrow. My job seemed to appeal to her. Now, her manner shifted like a spring day. Sun replaced clouds.
She smiled at me. âIâm sure youâll let us all know whatâs happening.â
âWill do.â
I hefted the tray on my shoulder so I could get through the tight space of the dining room and headed for the extra room.
