Chapter 11

Nathan pulled up outside a house on the outskirts of Horley as Kate looked out through the windscreen at the property. She whistled as she admired the smart, modern, detached home.

“Nice place,” she commented. “He’s doing well for himself.”

Nathan followed her gaze and nodded. “Yes, he is,” he agreed.

It wasn’t anything like Wilson’s house a few months ago, but it was still a very nice house.

They climbed out onto the gravel drive that crunched underfoot, walked up to the front door, and rang the doorbell.

“Do you think he’s going to be happy to see us?” Kate asked.

“I doubt it,” Nathan answered. “Not after he did that runner earlier.”

“I wonder why he did that,” Kate mused, curious as to his reasoning for dodging the police that were at the asylum.

“Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe he’ll fill in that blanks, for us,” he replied.

Kate nodded, noticing movement on the other side of the front door, moments before it opened to reveal the stocky man they’d seen before at Cane Hill.

Adam looked a little surprised to see them for a moment, clearly going a little tense as they held up their warrant cards.

“Detectives Halliwell and O’Connell,” Nathan said, introducing them. “We’d like a little chat please, Adam.”

Adam seemed like he was about to say or do something before he finally sighed and rolled his eyes. “Sure, you’d better come in,” he said and stepped aside. He’d changed since they’d seen him in the asylum, and was now walking about barefoot in knee-length shorts and a t-shirt.

Kate found herself in a long, pristine, white hallway with smart, modern picture frames hung on the wall. The images in them were of pretty models, posing in some provocative ways, including a couple that were clearly shot in derelict locations.

She caught Nathan looking at them too, and nodded towards the ones that had caught her eye with a knowing look.

Nathan acknowledged her and then followed Adam through to his living room. More photos were displayed on the walls, including a large print of a model on her hands and knees, her head on the floor, and her bum stuck up towards the camera with only a pair of skimpy red knickers to hide her modesty.

The image was almost pornographic in its depiction of the model in a shiny skin-tight black dress that gathered around her waist. But what Kate found more interesting was the long, derelict corridor it was shot in, and its similarity to Cane Hill.

“That one caught your eye, did it?” Adam asked.

“It’s certainly a striking image,” Kate replied.

“That’s Stella. She’s great, love her. Done a few shoots with her.”

“And, where was that shot?” Kate asked.

Adam smiled. “I think you know where.”

“Cane Hill.”

“Bingo.”

“Do you not worry who might see that when you have people over?” Nathan asked.

“Not usually. I like looking at it.”

“I bet,” Kate muttered.

“Besides,” Adam continued. “I have a boring landscape I can hang in its place if I know I have polite company coming over.”

“Doesn’t that get annoying, having to rehang photos all the time?”

“Doesn’t happen very often,” Adam answered.
