‘John?’

‘Hi, Tessa. I have hairs standing up on the back of my neck.’

‘So that’s not simply a cliché?’

‘No, it’s not. It’s actually happening. Ivan’s gone AWOL, and I’m not sure whether to ignore it, or do something about it, so I thought I’d ring you.’

Her mind switched to the conversation on the typed-up transcript she had read only ten minutes earlier. ‘You’ve presumably checked with his mum?’

‘Yes. It seems if Lottie, his girlfriend, is home, he stays with her, so it’s not ringing alarm bells with Mrs Newburg. I think it is now I’ve contacted her. She’s going to try to get in touch with Lottie, but if there’s no answer it will mean Lottie is flying. I imagine his mum will then go into proper panic, because this isn’t what Ivan does. If he’s not with Lottie, he’s with his mum helping take care of his dad. He’s never done this before, not even for an emergency. He once had to go to the dentist but he rang to tell me.’

‘That was the impression I got from our chat. Leave it with me, John. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.’
