CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Ronald started blowing up my phone with texts as soon as we climbed into Ida Belle’s SUV. I felt my pulse spike when I read that he’d managed to score two invitations to Veronique’s event, which was instantly replaced with that slight feeling of dread I got when I had to go shopping for girlie things.

“He’s going to make me buy new shoes and do my hair and makeup,” I said and sighed. “But I’m not wearing a push-up bra.”

Ida Belle nodded. “It’s always good to know where your line in the sand is.”

“The two of you are hopeless,” Gertie said. “I know we can’t go to the party, but at least we can go shopping with you.”

“What?” Ida Belle gave her a quick glance. “Why do we have to go shopping?”

“We don’t have to go,” Gertie said. “But we should go to offer our support, and to protect Ronald. You know how he gets about these things, and Fortune’s always armed.”

“You might defend Ronald,” Ida Belle said. “But I’m more likely to side with Fortune, and she doesn’t need any help.”

“I’m buying lunch,” I said.

Ida Belle perked up. “Antoine’s?”

“You play taxi, I’ll pay for gas, and food is your choice.”

“Definitely Antoine’s,” Ida Belle said. “And I’m having appetizer and dessert.”

“So am I,” I grumbled. “I probably won’t be able to eat a single grape once I’m shoehorned into that dress tomorrow.”

“And won’t be able to breathe until Thursday,” Ida Belle said.

“You’re not helping,” I said.

Ida Belle grinned. “I’m just glad it’s not me.”

“Good Lord, the two of you talk like it’s a walk down the plank,” Gertie said. “It’s a party that’s bound to have the most expensive food and drinks you can get in the state. You get to buy a fabulous dress—as a business expense, I might add—and you might find a clue to our increasingly complex case. Where is the downside in all of that?”

“I’m guessing the dress and all the other people circling the expensive food and drinks,” Ida Belle said.

I nodded and sent Ronald a text letting him know we were on our way and would pick him up in a few minutes. He was waiting on his front porch and hurried up as soon as we pulled into the driveway. He stopped at my window and looked into the SUV, then shook his head. “That sports bra won’t do at all.”

“I’m not wearing a push-up anything.”

“Fine,” he said and climbed inside. “Since this isn’t about getting extra votes from the Swamp Bar crowd, we can go with no bra at all. You’re not old enough for gravity to be an issue yet, anyway.”

Ida Belle grinned and I shot her a dirty look.

I was more than a little concerned when Ronald insisted we shop at Enchanted Evening. After our last disastrous shopping visit there, I figured if Daphne, the owner, didn’t lay eyes on us anytime in the next century, it would be too soon. But Ronald swore that Daphne was a total
