Chapter 14

Clarissa rummaged through the printouts in front of her, crossing off all the routine traffic and local flights that were coming through the airport. Macleod had tasked her to find out if any drugs were coming in that way, and also to check through whether the local police had missed anything. She was looking for patterns, anything on a regular basis coming through. As she examined the documents, she realised that there didn’t seem to be any flights coming from outside the United Kingdom. She placed a call to Harold Lyme, who Macleod had said seemed to be on top of his game with regards to being an air traffic controller.

‘Mr Lyme, it’s Detective Sergeant Clarissa Urquhart with the investigation team. I was just wondering if you could help me. I’m looking at flights arriving at the airport. Every flight seems to be coming from within the UK. Is that normal?’

‘Well, it is because we’re not one of the entry ports for other flights coming in. To be honest, on the commercial side of it, no one’s coming direct from another country. We’re too small an airport really for that. On the other side of it, ferry flights—that’s people who are bringing aircraft across the Atlantic or out of Europe to go across to America—they don’t tend to stop with us. They have to be further north, maybe Stornoway, Shetland, up that way. You have to be a registered port to fly into in the first place, and we’re not.’

‘So, everyone that’s coming to you is basically a UK citizen?’ asked Clarissa.

‘No, that wouldn’t be the case. We get some foreign pilots coming through, people on tours, flying here, there, wherever. If you get an irregular flight coming in from abroad, we have to hold the aircraft. We have to talk to customs about it because normally, they wouldn’t fly into here.’

‘Do you get many of those?’

‘No, it’s much easier for them to fly in further north.’

‘Do you get anyone coming from overseas, then coming from another airport down to here? For instance, would somebody fly into Stornoway and then fly down to yourselves in Mull?’

‘It’s not really far enough for a lot of them to do that, what with their flight time, better to land further on down. Ferry pilots, their job is basically to take a plane from here to there. They’re not into sightseeing on the way. Get up in the air, get the aircraft to wherever it needs to be, pick up your money, go home.’

‘Do the planes get searched on arrival?’

‘No, not for coming to the private aprons. Now, if you’re up on the main apron and they’re a scheduled flight, security has to check everybody on; it’s what’s called a critical area, or it’s like a control zone. So, you know that that aircraft has taken off from within a controlled zone at one airport, landed, and gone into the other one. So, it’s not been touched in between. If they’re going down to someone on the smaller airplane, well, it could have come from anywhere.
