Armature: If you will be using large amounts of clay, it is wise to build an armature first. Armatures vary from aluminum foil stick figures to steel pipe frames. Determine how flexible your piece needs to be and how large it will be. The larger the piece, the less flexible, and more sturdy the armature should be. It is good to fill the armature with sturdy materials such as balled up newspaper. Once the armature is packed will fillers, wrap plastic around it and tape it on. The plastic barrier will help keep the clay moist while working on the piece. Using an armature saves clay and reduces your costs in the end.
