TRICKSHOT

Trickshot stared at the misshapen monstrosity of a creature, pondering its riddle. He had already decided that he couldn’t beat the thing with sheer force. It probably wasn’t invincible, but its body seemed specifically designed to absorb or even be outright immune to physical damage. Holes was still stuck on the thing’s skin, after all. Therefore, it seemed like his Team would have to answer the creature’s riddle regardless of whether they wanted to or not.

That annoyed Trickshot. The Angel Bunny had probably gotten far away from them by now. If this dumb creature hadn’t decided to show up, Trickshot and his Team would have captured the Angel Bunny and won by now. As it was, they had to waste precious time answering the riddle of a creature that yelled too much, a riddle they may not even be able to answer at all.

“Repeat your riddle again,” said Bug Bite, folding his arms across his chest. “Slowly.”

The creature grinned, revealing its misshapen, uneven teeth. “I said, what walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening?”

“What a dumb riddle,” said Lethal Injection with a shake of his head. “I say we move on. No need to waste time trying to answer a pointless riddle from an even more pointless creature.”

“Actually, I think you guys should,” said Holes. He tried to push himself off of the creature’s hide but failed. “Not that I have any particular bias for saying that, of course.”

“We can’t go around it,” Trickshot pointed out. “So why don’t you two shut your mouths so Bug Bite can actually answer its riddle?”

Trickshot was pleased to see both Lethal Injection and Holes shut up. It wasn’t that he disagreed with them about the pointlessness of the riddle, necessarily. It was just that whining about the pointlessness of the riddle took time away from actually solving it.

Bug Bite, meanwhile, appeared to be silently contemplating the creature’s riddle. With his eyes closed and his chin on his chest, he looked like he was praying, although Trickshot knew that Bug Bite was not exactly what you’d call a believer in the power of prayer. Most likely, Bug Bite was thinking over the riddle. At this point, all they could do was wait.

Finally, Bug Bite opened his eyes and raised his head, a confident smile on his face. “Neat riddle, but the answer is as obvious as daylight: A human.”

“A human?” Lethal Injection repeated. He gestured at his own two legs. “Humans only walk on two legs at all times of the day. He’s probably talking about some weird creation of Aeno’s or something like that.”

“Wrong, human,” said the creature with a hiss. “Your ally is correct. The riddle refers to human beings. As infants, they walk on all fours. As adults, they walk on two legs. And as elders nearing death, many rely on canes for support, therefore adding a third leg to their bodies.”

“Exactly what I was thinking,” said Bug Bite. “So I got the riddle right.
