Chapter 15

Vengeance stood on a small hill overlooking the town of Falvia. Snow covered the ground, and long trails of smoke rose into the frigid air. His tail brushed aside the snow behind his feet, and he flicked the air with his tongue. Seven stood beside him, staring down at the town.

“She was here, wasn’t she?” she asked.

“Yes.” He didn’t bother telling her that the Cambrian had been thrown in prison by her own people, accused of being a thief; it had no bearing on what they were about to do. Dundell had been attacked, the town destroyed, hundreds left dead, and it was time for the Cambrians to suffer the same fate. Thinking of the Cambrian brought with it a whisper of a memory, and he shook his head in annoyance; it had become a regular thing, this memory that lingered in the recesses of his mind, but always out of reach.

“You only kill those who attack you first,” he said.

She looked at him in disbelief. “Why? They’re all Cambrians.”

“And you’ll still have plenty of bloodshed. But there are only two of us, and as powerful as we are, we cannot be everywhere at once. Our goal is to destroy the town, not kill every one of the townspeople. Leave the women and children – they will wish for death when they are cold and starving.”

“The Crimson Guard aren’t that merciful,” she said bitterly. “They had no qualms about killing my mother. Besides, I thought we wanted to destroy all Cambrians.”

His tongue flicked the air and he tasted her bitterness. “We will, but not today. First, they must suffer. Soon they will reach the point where death is preferable to life. And they will spread the word to their fellow Cambrians that death is on their heels.” He gazed down at the town. “Look at it – they think that their walls and gates will protect them, but they’ll quickly learn that that’s not the case.” He pointed to the right. “There is a tunnel under the wall where you will enter the town. I’ll go over the wall, and we’ll attack on opposite ends. They will get word out to the Guard quickly, but the closest outpost was attacked a week ago and they don’t have their full complement of Guards, so it will take them a while to arrive, by which time we will be long gone.”

Seven frowned. “We don’t wait for the Guards?”

“No. This is a quick attack. Cause as much destruction as we can within a short space of time, then retreat. Remember, our goal is to spread fear, not kill every Cambrian. Now let’s go.”

He took off at a run, ax in hand, not bothering to see if Seven followed him. Like all Cambrian towns, it was surrounded by a high wall, but he leapt over it without pausing, landing on a roof on the other side. He brought down his ax as screaming started within the house, then sent a flash of heat through his hand to set the roof burning.
