CHAPTER 14

Soren

There was no doubt about it—Elisa was planning her escape. First my moneybag went missing, and then my smallest knife disappeared from my weapons belt. I also noticed the food stores in my pack were lighter. The odd way she walked around the clearing made me suspect she’d shoved the items in her boots.

I said nothing on the matter of her thievery, deciding I would wait until we made camp later tonight. There wasn’t time to confront her now and punish her waywardness. My clansmen might start arriving at any moment, and I needed to keep watch and listen to the sounds of the forest.

“Please come sit down, human. You’re making too much noise. I am trying to listen for signs of my clansmen approaching.”

She paused mid-step and glared at me. “I’m sure you’ll have no difficulty hearing them coming. They’ll have women with them. Kidnapped women who won’t be happy about their situation. I expect they’ll be making plenty of noise.”

I grinned at her. “Aye, you’re probably right about that. Still, I want you to remain close.” I patted the rock and motioned her forward.

She stomped my way and settled on the rock with a huff, and it wasn’t long before I noticed her tucking her right foot underneath herself and fidgeting with the boot. Yes, she most definitely had her stolen items stored within. My loins tightened at the prospect of chastising her later.

My clansmen soon began arriving. Many had their human females gagged. Not that I could blame them. Most of the women appeared angry or frightened. No doubt they would make a great deal of noise if they weren’t gagged, which very well might’ve drawn the attention of hungry beasts or even the human soldiers from their village.

Odinn stomped into the clearing with a dark-haired female slung over his shoulder, and I bit back a grin at the sight of his woman flailing around and pounding her fists upon his back.

Elisa looked around the clearing in shock. When she made to move toward one of the women, as if to help her, or possibly remove her gag, I reached for her and pulled her to my side.

“Behave yourself, lass,” I said, leaning down as I growled into her ear. Before I straightened, I allowed myself one long inhale of her delicious scent.

“This is barbaric.” Her eyes widened. “Some of the women are bound by their wrists and their ankles. It’s not right. What of their families? I recognize several of these women and know their families will miss them dearly.” She blinked rapidly against a sudden sheen of tears.

I turned her in my arms and peered down at her. “The people from your village didn’t treat you well, Elisa. Some of these women might’ve been part of the mob who came after you. Yet you have compassion for them.” I found her reaction curious and a testament to her character. She wasn’t the sort of person to wish ill on others even if they very well might deserve it.
