This time Pete is not alone.

There are five of us, more than enough to make Pete’s office seem crowded. In addition to Laurie, Marcus, Pete, and me, he introduces us to Captain Mark D’Antoni of the New Jersey State Police.

I have a hunch that D’Antoni wasn’t just in the neighborhood; he’s the reason this meeting was called.

D’Antoni gives us three photographs to pass among us; all of them are obviously Espinosa’s guy from the park. Two of them seem to have been taken without his knowledge, while the third is a mug shot.

“His full name is Leonard Zamora, but he is known simply as Z,” D’Antoni says. “His parents brought him here from Spain when he was four years old. They were murdered in their home when he was nineteen, a crime that has not been solved.

“No one would be surprised if Z killed them; there were many reports of discord within the family. But the case was never made. Let’s just say that I doubt that he visits their grave every year to leave flowers.

“He has since been a suspect in numerous murders in various US cities, but has only been arrested once, in Chicago. The key witness against him there recanted her testimony, and the prosecutor in the case believed she was intimidated and threatened. But of course he couldn’t prove it.”

D’Antoni continues, “He is thought to hire himself out to the highest bidder. Sometimes organized crime; in one case a very rich individual who had grown tired of his wife. She was murdered, but neither the husband nor Z was ever charged. I am giving you the opinion of the investigating detective. That was in Atlanta.”

As I am listening, the anger that I felt in the park when Z showed me the pictures of Dani is rapidly returning. It’s all I can do to stay seated; I want to get up now and go after him … and Espinosa. Whether we officially close this case or not, I am going to see to it that this does not end well for those two guys.

“Interestingly, neither the Feds nor any local cops have anything on him for more than five years; no one knows where he was living, what he was doing, or who he was working for. This is the first sighting of him in all that time.

“The file on him says that he is a martial arts expert, an excellent shot, and particularly handy with a knife. In the murder business that is what is known as a triple threat. He is considered extremely dangerous and highly intelligent, not a great combination.”

“Any known contact between Z and Espinosa?” Laurie asks.

“No, and frankly their connection doesn’t make a huge amount of sense. Espinosa has always handled his business internally. For him to go outside to bring in Z, and to pay him the kind of money that Z would demand, means Espinosa views the situation as very significant. Espinosa is that rare crime boss that often commits the violent acts himself; he takes pleasure in it.
