CHAPTER 11

Rion entered her office with a scowl on his face. When her second-in-command woke in a bad mood, it took hours for his low spirits to improve. He was unusually defensive when he was in one of his sour states.

“Morning,” she said in a cheerful voice.

“Where’s Quentin?” he barked. “Would it kill him to be on time for a meeting?”

She shrugged rather than answering him. “Why don’t you get yourself a donut and another cup of coffee. We should move into the conference room.”

Based on the topic she planned to bring up, she didn’t want to be sitting behind her desk. At the conference table, they’d be on equal footing. She wouldn’t be the symbolic boss and the two shifters her subordinates.

Lyssa poured herself another cup of coffee. She couldn’t continue functioning without a decent night’s sleep. After she sent Grigore on his way, Lyssa had tried to fall asleep, but her mind had other ideas. Because of her demigod system, a sleeping pill wouldn’t provide her any assistance.

Two pink pastry boxes were on the kitchenette’s table. She opened each, surveying her options. Her mouth watered when she noted the apple fritter. With her sweet in hand, Lyssa headed for the conference room.

She made herself comfortable and bit into the sweet. It was a perfect bite. The spices, apple, glaze, and dough mingled together, exciting her taste buds. Between the sugar and caffeine, she wouldn’t have any issues staying awake during the meeting.

“Sorry, I’m late,” Quentin said. “Penelope got a late start for school and I needed to do a couple things around the house before heading over.”

He obviously didn’t know Penelope had made a detour before heading for school. That topic would have to wait until they covered the important subject at hand. Rion followed Quentin into the office with his own coffee and donut.

As much as she wanted to start the meeting, Lyssa asked Quentin, “Do you want to get yourself some coffee or a donut before we start?”

Quentin shook his head. “I made a rather large breakfast for myself and Penelope this morning. Let’s go ahead and cover whatever topic you wanted to discuss.”

Both men were on either side of her, eager to discover why she’d called the meeting. Neither of them seemed paranoid about what the topic would be.

“Last night, I met with a dearg-due and as a result of a subsequent discussion with Lucienus, I set our leprechaun free,” she said.

“I noticed the office was empty this morning,” Quentin said. “Why did you set him free instead of sending him into the void? He’s in the position where he can attack our people again.”

It didn’t surprise her that Quentin immediately spoke. He’d only been an alpha for a short period of time. The younger man tended to react before giving a matter the thought required to come to an accurate conclusion.

“Because of the meeting with the dearg-due, I have an understanding related to why we were attacked and the danger our compound is under because of a brewing war between the fae and the shifter population.
