This misericord supporter at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, shows death coming to the labourer, part of the only surviving dance of death sequence on a British misericord.
The dance of death featured on misericords at Coventry Cathedral, which were destroyed in 1940. It can still be seen on a misericord at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where death, in the form of a skeleton, leads away a wealthy man in the main carving. In the supporters he leads away a poor labourer digging in the field, and another man threshing corn. Death was the great leveller in medieval life.
