Chapter 5

"You're never going to believe me, but one of my refrigerators went down last night," Darla said. "It was the one that held tonight's meal."

Pursing my lips, I stared at the floor, believing every word. Obviously, the universe did not want me to have my Christmas party. It wanted me miserable during my favorite time of the year.

"No problem, Darla," I said. "I'm going to cancel the party anyway."

"No! Don't because of this! I can put together the original menu—some finger sandwiches, chips, dip... I'll have everything whipped up in no time."

"It's not just the food," I said, sitting back and meeting Jezebel's gaze. "After I got back from your place yesterday, I discovered my house had been broken into and they took all my white elephant gifts."

"Oh, my word!" Darla exclaimed. "Do they know who did it?"

"I think it was that guy I told you about who followed me and stole my wallet. He had my address and probably waited until I left before breaking in. He saw me carrying all my gifts and knew I had a big haul."

"That's terrible," Darla replied. "What's happening to people's Christmas spirit?"

Really good question. "Then last night, Elvira took down the tree." Despite my efforts, I couldn't hold back the tears. "She jumped from the banister onto the tree and it toppled over. Adam tried to rescue it, but he fell and I had to take him to the hospital to get stiches in his head."

Darla remained quiet for a long moment. "I'm so sorry, Bernie. I know how much those ornaments meant to you."

"Yes." I wiped my cheeks as Jezebel fetched a box of tissue. "Jezebel and Gunner are here cleaning up for me."

"Is Adam going to be okay?"

When he and Gunner strolled in from outside, they spoke in low tones, then returned to the living room. "He seems fine. They had to shave a strip of his hair to clean the wound. It looks pretty silly."

"I'm glad he wasn't hurt worse. What a relief."

"So, as you can imagine, I'm not in any mood to celebrate Christmas," I said. "In fact, I'd like to go to bed and wake up after New Year's."

"I'm working on changing her attitude," Jezebel said loudly so Darla could hear her. "We're all going to celebrate Christmas."

"No, I'm not," I said. "If you guys want to get together, fine. I'm staying home. Christmas is canceled."

"Put Jezebel on the phone," Darla said. "I need to plan with her. I know you've had a rough couple of days, but you're acting like the Grinch. You planned your little heart out and now Jezebel and I will take it from here. "

I handed the phone to my friend and announced I would take a shower. They didn't seem to understand that I had absolutely no intention of participating in any type of celebration. Forgetting tomorrow was Christmas Eve sounded like the best course of action for me. Perhaps Darla was right. I was the Grinch, but I couldn’t seem to get past my string of bad Christmas luck.
