An Inconvenient Truth

I awoke after sleeping only a few hours. I took the dog on a walk to Foxx’s house to get my keys back. I thanked him for his support the day before. We spoke for a little while, mostly just stuff about how we both hoped that Alana would make a full recovery. Foxx said he’d come by the hospital sometime in the afternoon. He also said he intended on calling Alana’s mother and Hani that morning and offering to drive them to the hospital if they needed him to. It was a complete turnaround from their argument in the bar the day before, but I guess family emergencies can have a way of putting priorities in perspective. Not always, but sometimes.

By the time I got back to my house, there was a news truck parked in the street. There were two people, a man and a woman, outside the truck. The guy stood behind a large video camera that was on a tripod and was pointing at the front of my house. The woman held a microphone. She stood beside the guy, but then she looked at me as I approached. I did my best to ignore them and turned to head up the driveway.

“Do you live with the police detective?” the female reporter asked me.

“No. I’m just her dog walker.”

Add news reporters to the shortlist of people Maui doesn’t like. Of course, everyone hates the media these days.

I went back into the house and fed the dog. Then I changed into my swim trunks and swam laps in the pool for about twenty minutes. I’m sure you think I’m crazy for exercising at a time like this, but the physical exertion seemed to have a way of calming my mind. You can’t concentrate on much bad stuff when every muscle in your body is concentrating on the physical task at hand.

I climbed out of the pool and sat on a patio chair after turning it to face the ocean. I watched the waves roll into the shore and tried to focus on their rhythmic sounds. I probably sat there for about thirty minutes, but I couldn’t get Alana’s attack out of my head. Someone had come into our home and tried to kill her. This was supposed to be the place she felt the safest, and now it would be a constant reminder of how dangerous the world can be. Granted, she already knew that being a police detective, but it’s one thing seeing it happen to others. It’s quite a lot different when the criminal shows up on your doorstep.

I went inside and took a long hot shower. I got
