Chapter 7

Later that evening, Emily texted to ask if I wanted to have dinner with her. At first, I felt hesitant. With everything going on, my first instinct was to hide in my room alone. However, after thinking it over, going out to dinner might take my mind off things for a bit.

I met Emily at the Pizza Pi. Pizza Pi was a local pizza restaurant located two blocks north of the college. The place wasn’t fancy and was basically a hole-in-the-wall type establishment. However, these places typically have delicious food. Pizza Pi wasn’t an exception.

I loved pizza, especially Chicago deep dish. Unfortunately, Dustin hated pizza. So, I rarely ate it. He mostly picked where we ate, so this was a nice change.

“So, what are you going to do about tomorrow?” Emily asked after the waiter took our drink order. “It must be weird going head-to-head with your boyfriend. I know it’d drive me crazy, if I had a boyfriend.”

So much for taking my mind off things.

“It’s purely academic,” I replied, trying to sound confident. “It’s not personal, it’s only about getting a good grade. That’s all. Nothing more, nothing less.”

She stared at me with her eyes squinted. “Are you trying to convince me, or yourself, Kara?”

“You got me,” I said as I leaned in. “I’m freaking out, Emily. I have no clue what to do? If I do a good job, I get a good grade. However, I make Dustin look bad.”

As I continued, I felt more and more tense. I grabbed Emily’s hand and squeezed. “What’s more important? My relationship or school. I don’t even know if I want to be a lawyer. There’s just so many things going through my head. What do I do?”

“First of all, calm down. Second, you’re going to break my hand,” Emily responded as she pried my hand off hers.

“Sorry.”

“Take a deep breath. It’s going to be fine.”

Although I felt like getting angry, I took a deep breath and stayed calm. By taking a moment, I began to feel at ease. Either that, or the second bottle of beer I’d downed.

“Hey,” I said as I noticed the busboy cleaning the table in the opposite corner of the restaurant. “Isn’t that Matt Rooks. You know, from Criminal Law 202 class.”

As soon as Emily turned around to look, Matt turned around with his back facing us.

“Hmm…” Emily said as she continued to stare. “I’m not sure who that is, but judging by the view from behind…he’s got a great a…”

“Emily,” I said as I interrupted her mid-sentence.

“What?” she said as she smiled. “I’ve been single for way too long. I can’t help it.”

We both began to chuckle. Suddenly, he turned back around. As soon as his gaze shifted to us, Emily turned back around, quickly. I diverted my eyes to the other side of the room.

“That’s Matt,” Emily said as she confirmed his identity.

I leaned in a whispered, “You don’t think he saw us staring, do you?”

“Nah,” Emily said as she shook her head. “Well…maybe not.
