Chapter 19

For the first time that day, Dani was at a loss as what to do with her time. Talking with Jade would have to wait until the woman was done with her chili and had presented it to the contest officials. Milton and JM had made it clear they weren’t the chatty type.

It would be a good hour or more until the winner was announced. Who else could she probe for clues?

Dani was standing near the rear of the ballroom, trying to come up with a plan, when she heard a commotion over in the corner.

Two male voices battled to be heard, but a loud alto drowned them all out. “I’m gonna pop both of you upside the head if you don’t calm down.”

Dani edged closer. Once she got within a few feet, she could see Lavonia Jools, an ex-MP and one of Spencer’s security team. She was between a brawny young man with bright red hair and Hugh Granville. The young guy was massaging his chin and the judge held a hand over his left eye.

Hmm! Dani scratched her head. Where had she seen the redhead before? And hadn’t Spencer mentioned that Lavonia was on campus patrol?

Before Dani could come up with any answers, she saw the security guard had a grip on both men’s upper arms. The woman looked as if what she really wanted to do was shake them both like a dust mop but was holding on to her temper by sheer willpower.

Hugh Granville shouted, “This muppet assaulted me!”

“I only hit him after he punched me,” the redhead protested still nursing his jaw.

“Why would he do that?” Lavonia let go of the men and crossed her arms.

The younger man puffed out his chest. “I told him that he was a mass murderer.”

Dani gasped softly. Had the redhead seen the TV chef messing with the propane tank?

“And, after I got this…this inane vegan’s attention with a little tap to his chin, I explained that scientific studies prove eating meat comes naturally, and animal protein is how we became verbal and more intelligent.” Hugh smirked.

“L-liar!” The redhead stuttered. “You punched me hard and there’s no way that study is right.” He paused, then added, “And I’m proud to be a vegan.”

Lavonia narrowed her eyes. “Okay, Mister…?”

“Hamilton Butcher,” the redhead supplied, then shot a look of loathing at Hugh when he burst out laughing.

“You, Mr. Butcher,” Lavonia continued, “and you, Mr. Granville, have a difference of opinion.”

“It’s more than an opinion,” Hamilton objected. “We have to stop killing and eating our animal brethren.”

“Never going to happen, mate. If we weren’t meant to eat animals, why are they made of meat?” Hugh snorted so hard he must have hurt himself because he rubbed his chest.

Hamilton pointed at the judge’s hand as it massaged his breastbone and crowed. “Just remember, heart attacks are God’s revenge for eating his animal friends.”

“Right.” Lavonia rolled her eyes and took Hamilton’s arm. “Neither of you is going to change the other’s mind, so let’s call this a draw.
