Saffron was up long before dawn the next day. It was Tuesday, and the locals would be lining up in their cars for the Tuesday Egg Line, where Saffron stood at the top of her driveway and exchanged cartons of eggs for payment. It was convenient for the customers, efficient for Saffron, and she looked forward to it every week. This week, she was sure, sheâd have lots of questions about the movie set to answer, and maybe a few about Zayne Grayson, too.
She made her way down to the egg house in the cool, damp dark of the early morning. Jasper was standing guard near the front doors, and she stopped to give him a good scratch.
âThanks for your help, buddy,â she said, âyouâre a good guard donkey.â
Jasper let out a happy grunt.
Curry, following at Saffronâs heels, bawked. She leaned down and scratched his chest, too, âAnd you,â she said, âyou make a good team.â
âYouâre probably hungry, huh?â she asked the donkey. She led him to the barn and opened his stall door. He trotted inside.
âIâm gonna keep you in here this morning,â she said, âwith all the cars coming for the egg line.â Though she often had him pull the little egg cart to the top of the driveway and stand while she handed out the eggs, she thought today the customers might be a bit too chatty. Sometimes, when customers dawdled, Jasper was too social. Heâd been known to stick his head in an open car window to say hello if a customer tarried too long.
She gave him a big scoop of grain, and he didnât seem to mind staying behind as she went to take care of the hens.
Her girls greeted her with a cacophony of chortles and clucks. The egg house had a cozy feel, with its bright yellow lights and the warmth from the hens. A soft breeze blew in the wire-covered windows and somehow everything else happening in Saffronâs life seemed a distant memory.
Tikka, Saffronâs first friend on the farm, called out a three-note greeting that the hens seemed to reserve for Saffron. In response, Saffron tossed a handful of scratch grains into Tikkaâs pen.
The fluffy Salmon Faverolles that had come to live with Saffron last Christmas bounced over to snatch up their favorite bits: the cracked corn.
The other hens in the other pens set up a racket for treats of their own, and Saffron spent the next few minutes walking up and down the aisle, tossing scratch into each pen and chatting with her girls.
âAhhh, Sunshine, I see youâre coming out of your molt nicely. Look at those glossy new feathers! And Cleo, I didnât think it was possible for you to get any fluffier, but youâve done it!â She stopped at the last pen, the one set up for Cupcake and her chicks.
âCupcake, how are you doing after losing one of your brood?â Saffron had been worried that Cupcake would take Duchessâ absence hard, but in truth, the other two kadaknath chicks seemed to be keeping the mother hen busy enough that she hadnât noticed.
