Mexicans and other Latinos protest in front of the Chicago office of Immigration and Naturalization in 1997. The demonstrators wanted immigration officials to stop raids against undocumented workers. They were also protesting changes in immigration laws that made legal residents ineligible for food stamps and social security benefits. The sign on the right asks, “Where did your parents come from?” (Courtesy La Raza.)

On almost every corner in Chicago are Mexican and Guatemalan street vendors. Esperanza Torres (Mexican), pictured in 1998, is on her corner on Twenty-sixth Street in the Little Village neighborhood. Torres sells tamales, pork skins, corn on the cob, fruit juices, snow cones, sliced watermelon, cucumbers, and mangoes sprinkled with salt, lime juice, and cayenne pepper. She is wearing her city vendor license. (Photograph by Wilfredo Cruz.)
