3) Passed Pawns Must Be Pushed.

A passed pawn is a pawn with no other pawns in its way. In short, it’s a pawn that has a clear path to the other side of the board (where it can be promoted to a queen, or another piece). This includes pawns that are one file to either side, and thus able to capture. Consider this situation:

White’s pawn on a5 is a passed pawn because there are no black pawns on the a or b files. Black’s pawn on c7 is also a passed pawn. Both pawns on the e file are not passed pawns. Black’s pawn on g7 and white’s pawn on h4 are also not passed pawns, because they will be able to capture one another when they get closer.
