Chapter Eight
He watched them building the giant marquee from the mid-stair landing. His eyes tracked the workers as they laid out all the parts in a pattern that clearly only made sense to them. He was rather impressed when they pulled a few ropes and the whole thing rose up, becoming self-supportingâonce theyâd secured their pulley system, of course.
He jogged down the stairs, a little spring in his step. He was feeling better and better as each day went by. His Henrietta was opening to him more and more, their conversations becoming easier and lighter. Their meals were getting far more intimate as they sat closer and closer at the breakfast room table, and he was certain that last night, if the wine had been flowing, theyâd have definitely ended up in bed together.
As it was, he was the perfect gentleman; just as she requested, there was no touching of any kind, unless one of the family was present. Which meant that despite having to put up with the lot of them, he was rather looking forward to their engagement party tomorrow.
Tomorrow at their afternoon tea party heâd get to hold her hand as they walked around the tables, wrap his arm around her as they greeted the guests, maybe heâd get to kiss her at the end of all the toasts. God, he hoped he would. He was desperate to feel her lips again, to taste her mouth and feel her body pressed against him. Her large breasts pushed up between them, the swell of her arse in his handâ
He paused for a second and took a deep breath, willing his body to behave. Heâd been like a bloody teenager this last week as he desperately touched himself each night and every morning, feeling unfilled and empty each time he came with Henriettaâs name on his lips. Heâd even awoken a few times with the evidence of his more than enjoyable dreams smeared across his stomach. The mere thought of Hattie in some compromising way made his cock jump aliveâhe hadnât had so many spontaneous hard-ons since heâd hit puberty.
When he got himself back under control, he continued on, only to find himself pausing again outside the conservatory. Hattie had taken position on one of the sofaâs, her arm thrown over its back, her chin resting on her forearm as she stared out the window at the men still working on the marquee.
â¦Work within his boundaries. Heâs told you to have an afternoon tea party in the garden. So have an afternoon tea party in the garden. Work within that.
Queen Katrineâs words whispered in his mind, and a thought occurred to him. She wasnât saying do exactly what the King wanted, but to do what they wanted to within the limits heâd set. Richard said they had to have the party at Renfrew, that it had to be an afternoon tea service. He hadnât said they had to have it in the marquee. He didnât say it had to be on the lawnâ¦
He couldnât give Hattie exactly what she wanted, but he could make it more her.
