chapter Fourteen

Not Sorry

Elizabeth

Three months have passed since the day I twisted my ankle in the woods. I honestly didn’t know what to expect out of this marriage. I didn’t even know him before we said I do. At the most I thought we could be cordial.

However, I didn’t expect to be this content. We’ve fallen into a complete routine. In the morning, Chayton and I cook breakfast together. Afterwards we go our separate ways. Him outside to chop wood or to work on the woodshed and me into my office to write.

At 1:30 we head over to the pack lands so I can help with lunch for the unmated men. This has become one of my favorite parts of the day. I love the she wolves of the pack. Those ladies are like my sisters.

“Breakfast was delicious, babe,” Chayton says standing from the table and rubbing his belly.

I know he uses the term babe as a friendly term of endearment, but every time the word slips out of his mouth my heartbeat stumbles and my face heats up. For some odd reason I seem to be extremely horny lately. Not only that, but I’ve started getting these sudden hot flashes whenever he is near. It makes it difficult to be around Chayton.

“Thank you,” I say, taking the plate he hands me. I place the empty plate in the dishwasher. A nudge at my leg brings my gaze down. Miko has his food bowl in his mouth. I take it from him and rinse it before putting it in my dishwasher.

“I’m going to try to get the tin roof on the firewood shed before we head over to the pack lands today.”

“Dang, that was quick. You’re already putting the roof up.” I clean my hands on the dishtowel before turning to face him with my back against the sink.

“What can I say? I work fast.” He isn’t lying. He started the shed only a week ago. “What’s the game plan for you today? Have you figured out that plot hole?”

I smile at how invested he is. He always wants to know my plans, especially when it comes to writing. At night when I put Miko to bed, Chayton and I sit up and talk for hours. There’s never a lag in conversation.

“Not yet, I need a little more time. But not today, Miko and I are heading to town to get him new shoes and clothes. He’s already outgrown his old stuff.” My stepson rarely takes human form, but when he does, I like for him to have proper clothing.

Chayton furrows his brow. “He got new shoes last month.”

“I know, and they are already too small.”

A huge smile spreads over his face, showing all his perfect teeth. He turns to Miko and rubs his head. “That’s my boy. You’re going to be big and tall like your dad.”

In this moment, I should be thinking about how Chayton is rubbing his son’s head. How he’s speaking to him proudly as a father even though Miko has yet to show him his human form.
