Mr. Greer was a troll.

FOLLOWING CAM FELT WRONG. She knew it wasn’t really Cam, but it looked like him, and she’d promised herself after the unwarranted jealousy with Tilly that she wouldn’t be a distrustful type of girlfriend. This was different, naturally, but it still felt like spying.

With six people trailing one, it felt more like ganging up on a person than simple spying. True, three members of the group were nature faeries, but if anyone was going to give them away, it was the sprites. Alden had used his instant transport to bring Holly from the Everly’s to where Carissa was trailing the changeling pretending to be Cameron.

Even though Carissa was hiding in the otherworld, the fake Cam seemed paranoid, looking this way and that. Carissa expected the chauffeur to pick Cameron up, at which point it would be impossible to follow him on foot. The only way to catch him then would be to wait at Cameron’s apartment, assuming he would go there. The impostor, however, did not call for the car. Instead, he walked by foot across the street and in the same direction as Mr. Greer.

The group could only watch from a distance. Crossing the road directly would mean taking the risk of being seen if the changeling could see into the otherworld. Carissa passed the adder stone to Holly, who had a similar reaction to Carissa on witnessing the true identities of Cam and Mr. Greer.

Even from across the street, it was clear that the two men were talking to each other. Carissa tried to concentrate. Elf ears could pick up sound better than a human’s, though that distance was a challenge even for her.

Anything she could have heard was undermined by a distraction of three little sprites trying to get a view from their seats in the purse hanging from Carissa’s shoulder. Hiya, not watching out for Cynth right in front of him knocked into her accidentally, then purposely as he pushed her out of his way. The two floated out of the purse, but even then they fought for a clear view. Cynth’s reaction was to hit Hiya with faerie dust every time he got in her space. Chaos finally blasted them both, which only led to a full-on faerie dust fight.

“Stop,” Carissa commanded. Then seeing the shimmering mess all over her purse she dropped her concentration entirely and tried swiping the dust off, “Look what you’ve done. You’re ruining the new purse.”

The faeries shrank back. Carissa’s eyes traveled down to her shoes. More faerie dust covered the tips of the dressy mauve heels.

“Great, you’ve got my shoes too.”

Then she looked closer. It was a white powder, not the sparkled glitter of faerie dust. She had seen something like it before, back at the Seelie Tree.

“What’s wrong?” Holly pulled her out of her thoughts.

“Look.” Carissa knelt down and swiped the dust onto her finger.

Holly grabbed Carissa’s hand and pulled it close to her face. Then she let go and began digging around in her oversized tote bag.
