Chapter Thirteen
Chaos
She⦠she left. Iâm hunched against the rocky wall of the cave, wanting to disappear into myself. I brought her here to show her a part of myself I keep hidden from everyone else. I was ready to open up to her, and in the end, I somehow fucked it up, just like I always do.
What had I done wrong? What could I have done to make her stay? The roar of the waterfall drowns out my sighs, a physical representation of the torrent of despair I feel within me. I crush moss beneath my hands, the sweet smell sticking to my fingers, turning them green. Slumped and lonely, I sit unmoving until I am sore, until I am sure she is long gone from the valley.
Unfurling my legs from beneath me, I stretch, audibly groaning when my spine cracks in protest. Squaring my shoulders, I exit my small, cozy cave. Emerging from the dark tunnel, I shield my eyes from the setting sun. The grass is bathed in the pinks and purples of twilight, turning the land a new color. My breath puffs out in the crisp air as I stomp back to the house.
A splash comes from my left, and droplets of water hit my arm, turning the blue of my sweater almost black.
âNot tonight!â I snarl, unsure if itâs Melia or the brat of a duchess. Either way, I know I donât want to see any of them. If either creature dared to surface, I wouldnât hesitate to take my frustration out on them, strip their tails scale by scale while they scream into the night.
Mercifully, and for the best, the river stays silent, allowing me the solace of returning home without encountering another being. Iâm annoyed, angry in a way I didnât know was possible. At myself? Perhaps. I canât figure out what made her flee. I can feel her attraction to me, feel the pull across the stars bringing her to me, little by little. Still, what if I was wrong about the way she felt? Could I be?
I stride down the hall, my vision tunneled in on my destination. In my haste, I almost run into Kath. She yelps, dropping a dirty towel on the floor, the clattering of cutlery loud and stark in the silence of the house. Still, I donât stop. I donât offer to help her as I usually would.
âMaster Chaos?â She calls angrily. Kath, who has stuck by me since we arrived in this cove, who has kept me from making old mistakes, helped me start to atone for sins I will never be able to make up forâsheâs one of the few who deserves my respect, but I keep walking.
âChaos!â She yells, a frustrated sigh leaving her mouth when I donât answer again, but I donât care. I love Kath like family, and I will apologize later. Sheâll understand. I swear, I hear the words âstubborn asshole,â and sheâs not wrong, I just donât want to discuss my feelings right now.
