âCan we trust him?â Asteria asked, and Gavril felt himself bristle though he tamped it down immediately. For one, these people didnât know of his connection to Zathrian. For another, he had no call to take up cudgels on Zathrianâs behalf. He hardly knew the man, after all.
âI wish I could say yes,â Keres said, stopping in her pacing, and turning to where they sat around the large oval table.
When Keres had said she would attempt to contact Zathrian, Gavril hadnât expected her to do that this quickly. She had refused to explain how, saying that it was arcane magic and canât be used by everyone. It only whetted Gavrilâs curiosity, especially since he knew that she was being truthful, but for now he was ready to hold his peace.
âWhat if itâs a trap to capture us?â Aelric asked.
Gavril looked down at where his hands were clasped on the table. They had tightened so much without his volition, and he forced himself to relax. Things had become easier once everyone knew he wasnât Vulir, but Gavril. He still had met with anger and hostility at first, but by the time their plan was in motion, there had been a grudging acceptance of his presence. Keres had told them everything except that he was Zathrianâs soulmate and had warned them to keep calling him Vulir. She had spun a tale about how Gavril had caught the emperorâs eye during his brief apprenticeship and so they had to keep his existence a secret for now.
None of them knew of his soulmark and their concerns were valid, so why was he getting angry when they voiced that?
He was grateful to Keres for keeping his secret, and no matter how much sheâd tried to tell him to reveal himself to Zathrian, he just couldnât. She had been concerned for Zathrian, but Gavril had been too afraid. At first he had fooled himself by saying he would do it soon, but he hadnât, and the longer heâd waited, the harder it had become till even Keres had given up.
Everyone was used to calling him Vulir now, though they all knew he wasnât. There were times when he felt like a thief- after all, heâd stolen Vulirâs body as well as his name. Still, he couldnât bring himself to contact Zathrian or to tell him the truth. He hadnât told anyone, not even Keres, of the accidental meeting he had with Zathrian weeks ago. It remained fresh in his memory, and he hoped the emperor would have moved on from all that by now. Zathrian didnât deserve to suffer, but Gavril was too much of a coward to tell him the truth. If that wasnât proof that Zathrian deserved better, he didnât know what was.
The thought surprised him, even as he tuned out the conversation happening around him. Gavril had always had a healthy amount of self-respect and he had never thought of himself as not deserving of having a soulmate bond with the emperor. But
