Research has confirmed my own personal experience, that when people are told someone is about to try to influence them on a topic that matters to them, they are less likely to be influenced. Researchers Jonathan Freedman and David Sears carried out an experiment where they had a speaker present to three hundred high school students on the subject of teenage driving. While pre-polling showed that every student believed teenagers should have the right to drive, the presenter spoke about why teenage driving should be banned. Some of the students were told ten minutes ahead of time that this was the opinion the presenter would be advocating; other students were told two minutes ahead of time; and still other students didn’t know the speaker’s position at all until he was introduced and began speaking. Afterward, the researchers again polled students to find out if their beliefs on the issue had shifted.
