Whoâs Taking Who for a Walk?
The unconscious part of your brain is like an untrained dog. The dog has been conditioned through its life experiences to act in specific ways. It doesnât have the ability to think cognitively, reason, and use logic the way we can. Imagine the cortex of your brain is you, and the unconscious part of your brain is the dog. If you want more control over your life experiences, and you have places you want to go and things you want to achieve, you need to gain control over that âdogâ because you are always holding the leash with the dog on the other end. And itâs a massive dog. If you allow it to start chasing a rabbit, it drags you with it! The key is to use Zero Tolerance to keep that dog to heel as soon as it starts to show an interest in the rabbit.
Imagine having this big dog with you throughout your day. Itâs a wonderful dog, and if you train it properly, it will be loyal, protective, loving, and helpful. It will never be able to use reason or logic the way you can, but itâs okayâthatâs your job. And you can work together. If, on the other hand, when the dog starts barking and chasing something or someone that is not a real threat, you âbuy intoâ that behavior and follow the dog, it will keep delaying your results. The techniques weâve shared in this book are designed to help you to gain control of that dog, and retrain it, using kindness, compassion, and consistency.
The best part of all of this is that your dog wonât listen to anyone else. No one else has any control over your dog. He may react to others, but others have no power over him. And you get to retrain him so that he reacts and responds differently. You are the boss. You are the only boss. Even though it may not feel that way sometimes.
