Chapter 12

That evening, Jordan and I sat on my couch, enjoying a glass of the organic chardonnay from Never Quit Wining. Catnip had curled up between us and purred loudly as Jordan stroked his head.

“I couldn’t believe what we saw today,” I murmured. “It still makes me sick to my stomach. She attacked her mom, who fought right back. It was like something out of a movie.”

“The wife and daughter need to be looked at more closely,” Jordan said. “I spoke to Trevor earlier today, and he said they both have great motive.”

“What’s Pam’s motive, besides her husband being a jerk?”

“Butte was having an affair with one of his nurses, and Pam found out,” Jordan replied. “That was the start of the divorce proceedings.”

“Gross,” I muttered. I couldn’t imagine talking to Butte for more than a minute, let alone having an affair with him. “So she finds out he’s making time with the nurse, then… kills him? Why? Out of rage?”

“Or money,” Jordan said, shrugged. “Like you guys suggested. She realized she’d have to split everything down the middle and decided if he was going to have a little side fun, she’d make sure she was compensated well.”

“What happened to the nurse?” I asked.

“Not sure about that one,” Jordan replied. “Trevor is trying to track down a name. He’s going to talk to the staff at Butte’s office tomorrow.”

“I bet I could find out who she was before then,” I said, picking up my phone and setting down my wine glass.

“How are you going to do that?”

I dialed Gina.

“What’s up, Sam?” she greeted me.

“Hi, Gina. Listen, I was wondering if you knew the nurse at Butte’s clinic who no longer works there.”

“Let me think a minute… I did hear something about this not too long ago.”

“Take your time.”

I waited as she muttered to herself, then finally she shouted, “Jillian Goodwin! That was her name.”

“Do you know her?” I asked.

“Yeah, but we aren’t close. We went to school together, but she hung out with a different crowd.”

“Do you know why she isn’t working for Butte anymore?”

“No, I don’t. Why?”

If Gina didn’t know about it, the affair had to be a pretty tightly kept secret that I shouldn’t be gifting to anyone. However, Gina was my friend and had just saved the police time in discovering the nurse’s identity.

“She was having an affair with Butte,” I blurted.

“Sam!” Jordan hissed.

“That’s gross,” Gina replied. “I wonder what was in it for her?”

“We need to find out.”

“I’ll go with you to talk to her,” Gina suggested. “I wonder if she’s working now?”

I didn’t have an answer, but if she had kept up her work in nursing, there were only two places for her to go: Butte’s office or the local emergency clinic. “Maybe at the emergency clinic?” I asked.

“Hmm. Maybe. Let me make some calls and I’ll touch base with you in the morning.”

“Sounds good.” I hung up and laid my head back against the pillows.

“I wish you hadn’t said anything to her about the affair,” Jordan grumbled.
