Chapter Nine

Helping Evelyn was a priority, but there were other important things in my life that I couldn’t neglect. Attending the town’s annual haunted house with Shawna and Jade was one of them.

Apparently, it was high on Evelyn’s must-do list as well. On our drive there, she appeared in the backseat of my car next to Shawna. My reaction to being startled after hearing Evelyn say my name during one of her unannounced visits had gotten a lot better. I didn’t swerve all over the road or end up in a ditch.

“Hey, Evelyn,” I said to let Jade and Shawna know she was traveling with us. Although, by the way Shawna was vigorously rubbing her arms from the chill, I felt certain she was close to saying something about it.

I glimpsed in the rearview mirror and noticed that Evelyn had switched costumes again and looked like a huge shimmering bumblebee. The fuzzy yellow ends of her antennas were the only parts of her outfit that weren’t blue.

“I finally found Kevin,” Evelyn said. “He’s staying at the Beaumont because Roy still has my house cordoned off with tape.” She pressed her lips into a thin line.

It was a good thing she had trouble finding locations and couldn’t move objects. Otherwise, I feared the sheriff would have gotten a visit and seen some of his personal possessions flying around.

“I overheard him talking to another guest at the inn. Did you know he was moving his art gallery here to be close to me?” She sniffled, but no tears trickled down her cheeks, not even ghostly blue ones.

“Kevin told us about the move when he picked up Brutus,” I said. There wasn’t much else I could say to console her, so I didn’t bother trying.

“The thought of him having to stay with those Abbott girls and not in his own home…well, it’s just not right. Oh, and did I mention that Serena is the worst when it comes to money?”

“Really?” I asked, wondering what Evelyn had also overheard.

“Yes.” Evelyn gripped the back of my seat and pulled herself closer. “She had the audacity to ask him if he knew who’d inherited my property. Then she wanted to know if it was him and if he’d be willing to sell it to her.”

“Does Kevin inherit the property?” I asked.

“Of course, he does. I changed the will after Daniel died.”

Evelyn’s husband had been dead a while. If Kevin wanted to get rid of her to gain control of his inheritance, he would have done it long before now. “What did Kevin tell Serena about selling?” Jade had picked up enough of the conversation to ask.

“He knew I would never sell my home and told her absolutely not,” Evelyn said with smug satisfaction as she slid back in her seat.

I smiled and shook my head to relay Evelyn’s answer, then followed the car ahead of us into a graveled parking area that ran along the brick exterior wall surrounding the By the Bay Cemetery.

“It looks like the place is going to be busy tonight,” Shawna said, twisting in her seat to stare out the window.
