Chapter 10

What Happens in Boston

It was less than an hour from Salem to Boston, but I still wasn’t looking forward to the drive. These days, I didn’t leave my hometown very often…I couldn’t count a jaunt over to Marblehead as exactly leaving my neck of the woods…and I had to admit my fingers gripped the steering wheel a little more tightly than they probably should as I turned off Highway 128 onto Highway 1, heading south.

Then again, my trepidation might have stemmed more from my unease about concealing this trip from Noah than worries about Boston traffic. Yes, I could tell myself over and over again until I was blue in the face that there was no way I could possibly explain how I knew my investigation needed to go in this direction without revealing how I’d used magic to get to this point, but those excuses rang pretty hollow.

He deserved better.

But you can’t say anything, I thought, as if scolding myself in that firm, no-nonsense mental voice might somehow make me feel better about the situation. You haven’t known him long enough to tell him the truth.

Even that excuse didn’t feel quite right. True, Noah and I had only been romantically involved for less than two weeks, but we’d known each other for almost a year. Shouldn’t that count for something?

Possibly, and yet I realized deep down it still wasn’t enough.

The green Massachusetts countryside rolled past as I traveled south, but I knew I wasn’t in any mood to appreciate its beauty.

No, I just wanted to get this trip over with as quickly as possible and head straight back to Salem, where I could at least let my guard down when I was home. Milo and Cinny knew I needed to make this trip to see if I could find any more clues that pointed to Trevor Miller’s murderer, and they’d assured me they’d be just fine spending a few hours home alone on what should have been one of my days off with them. True, we’d had all day Sunday together, and Cinnamon had seemed much more cheerful, as though she was getting used to the reality of her kitten-less state.

All the same, I was very glad I’d convinced Doris that her familiar should stay with me a bit longer than the original seven days we’d agreed upon.

Boston was as crowded and hectic as ever, and I knew I must have annoyed quite a few motorists with my granny-style, cautious driving. But since I wasn’t as familiar with the city as I knew I should be, it just seemed safer to take it slow until I finally reached the parking garage about halfway down the street from the impressive building where Miller & Miller was located.

As I approached the front entrance, I found myself wondering if the original Miller had designed the place. It was newer than some of the other downtown buildings, clearly dating to the 1800s rather than the eighteenth century or even earlier, and was
