As early evening settled over Oakwood, casting long shadows that stretched across the streets, Dorothy's mind was alive with thoughts of the conversation she had just shared with Ainsley, Sophie, and Adam. She walked briskly, her steps purposeful, as she made her way towards the familiar glow of the bookstore.

But fate had other plans for Dorothy, for as she turned the corner, a sleek black cat materialized before her, its emerald eyes glinting mischievously in the fading light.

"Buttons, what are you doing here?" Dorothy asked, mildly annoyed at the persistent, meddlesome cat.

"Crystal and I were following Theo again, and we found out something very interesting," Buttons said, his tail swishing back and forth excitedly.

"What were you two up to this time?"

"Well, we trailed him to his shop, thinking we'd sneak through the back and see what we could find over there." Crystal interjected, equally as excited to tell the story. "When we got there, imagine our surprise when we saw Zoe show up, speak to Theo briefly, and then follow him inside."

"What?" Dorothy was alarmed at this turn of events. "She could be in trouble over there. Did you two go inside?"

Buttons and Crystal looked at each other before responding. "No, we didn't dare to go in," Buttons said. "We thought it best to wait outside for a while so that Zoe could come back out."

The trio remained standing there for a few moments, trying to figure out their next move when Crystal spoke up again. “We waited out there for almost two hours, but Zoe hadn’t emerged yet. That’s why we came to get you, we suspect that something has gone wrong.”

The words struck Dorothy like a bolt of lightning, her heart sinking to the pit of her stomach. She fought the urge to succumb to a panic attack as she fumbled in her purse for her phone, attempting to call Adam to inform him of what had happened. Suddenly, she dropped her purse on the sidewalk, scattering items everywhere. Buttons and Crystal rushed to help her gather up her things while also trying to calm her down. “Let’s get a hold of Adam first before we go running over there," Crystal suggested. "We don't want Zoe getting into any more trouble."

Dorothy nodded in agreement, finally managing to take a deep breath and regain some semblance of composure. She took out her phone and quickly dialed Adam's number, knowing that timing was critical in their situation.

"Adam, it's me," she said as soon as he picked up. "We need to get Ainsley over to the antique store right away. Zoe is in trouble and we need to get her out of there." She explained everything that Buttons and Crystal saw, leaving no detail out.

Once she was done, she heard Adam take a deep breath on the other end of the line. "I'll be right there," he said, his voice full of determination and urgency. Dorothy gave him directions before ending her call and turning back towards Buttons and Crystal.

"Let's go," she said firmly, taking off down the street without looking back.
