Chapter 22

Emma looked around frantically until she located Kelly talking to Piper. Even with her bright pink hair, Kelly had a habit of disappearing from Emma's view. Being short didn't help, and she had the grace and spunk of an overzealous pixie. She wanted to know everything that was going on through the shoot and was constantly asking Piper and Trisha questions. The older women were patient, explaining everything she asked about.

"Kelly, over here! I need your help." Emma had learned quickly that the easiest way to get Kelly to stay by her side was if the younger girl thought she was being useful.

"What, Emma?" Kelly raced over to stand in front of Emma, looking around to see what Emma needed help with.

"Look, we promised Lizzie we’d stick together, and you keep running off—"

"I'm right here; it’s no big deal. I'm keeping you in sight at all times. Believe me, I don't want to give you any trouble, and I sure don't want to end up like Camille."

Emma gave a shrug. She was learning there was no way to keep a constant handle on the younger girl; she was just too full of energy.

"Listen, everybody’s taking a break and heading over to the bed-and-breakfast for some food. Now is the perfect time to eavesdrop and see what's going on. They seem to talk more by themselves versus being too close to Trisha and Piper."

"Yeah, I noticed that too. And basically, I'm invisible. They constantly talk in front of me without even thinking about it."

"Let's give them a couple minutes to get over and get settled, and then we'll sneak in and find a chair or table close enough to hear the conversations."

Kelly gave a nod of agreement with Emma's suggestion, and they watched as the rest of the film crew headed over to the main house. Piper and Trisha made their way into Lizzie's house rather than joining the others. The two girls waited, hearing the back door to Lizzie's house slam shut, and watched the others enter the front entrance of the plantation house. Then they raced across the lawn to the back entrance of the bed-and-breakfast. Cutting through the kitchen, they entered the dining room and spotted a table was close enough to the others that they could hear the conversation, but not be noticed. As they made their way to the table, they quickly grabbed a drink and snacks to munch on.

"Well, I have to admit Piper is a lot easier to work with than Camille." Tony stretched his arms over his head, working out the kinks from holding the camera as he spoke.

Emma grinned at Kelly. She was right; they were going to pick up on some gossip.

"Piper even has Earl feeling like he's part of the group. She sent him back into town to pick up some supplies. That's what that poor man needs, a purpose and a kind word." Ophelia said, and Tiffany nodded in agreement.

Tony didn't answer right away. He was busy taking a huge bite of the Danish he held in his hand and chased it with a swig of soda.
