“I think you’re lying,” Briar whispered.

“I’m not. I swear he leaves the dorms and disappears,” Hunter said quietly.

“Then why haven’t we seen him yet?” she asked.

I shushed them both, peering through the shrubs around the dorm for any sign of Carter.

Hunter swore he saw him leaving the dorms again and hadn’t caught him coming back which meant he was around here somewhere. Briar and I had to wait until it was dark before we could sneak out and join Hunter. For two hours, we’d been hiding in the shadows of the dorm building, just waiting.

“This is a waste of time,” I said, sitting back on my heels. “You’re sure you saw him leave?”

Hunter mocked my words as he tilted his head back and forth. “Yeah, I did.”

I was starting to wonder if we shouldn’t try to scope out the main building when Briar grabbed my arm hard and pointed.

Across the lawn, seeming to appear out of the shadows and nowhere near the main building, was Carter. His walk seemed off, like he was overbalanced. I waited for him to come to the dorms, but then he veered right and the three of us shared a quick glance before we moved out of the bushes and followed as close as we dared, meaning we kept him just in our sights.

“Where is he going?” Briar whispered.

I thought we’d see him head into the main building; there was a chance he was working with Ivan, or Hooke even. Morris seemed a stretch, but there was always that chance. But he walked to the right of the building and I cursed as I realized where he was going.

“Zach?”

“Any bets on if he’s going to head into the cathedral?” I asked them both and Hunter smacked himself in the forehead. “Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.”

“What am I missing?” Briar asked.

“You’ll see soon enough.”

With our research on necromancers and the murders of my dad and Addie, I’d completely forgotten to tell her about the abandoned building on campus. The one that no one seemed to know what had been there before it was deemed uninhabitable—condemned, really—and closed off to students and staff.

Carter kept on a straight path toward it and we struggled to keep up and stay hidden at the same time. Suddenly, he stopped and we dropped to the ground, pressing ourselves as flat as we could. There was a bright flash of white light and by the time we got ourselves up off the ground again, he was gone.

“Wait, where did he go?” Briar asked, glancing around wildly. “He was just there.”

“That light, you think it has something to do with the building?” Hunter asked as he approached it slowly.

I expected Carter to jump out at us from somewhere, but he was just gone. We arrived at the cathedral without incident and I started to reach for the boarded-up front doors when Briar grabbed my hands to stop me.

“Are you crazy?”

“What? I want to see if its open.”

“What if it’s booby trapped?”

I grinned at her serious scowl.
