ISABEL

* * *

“Morning beautiful,” Morgan says as I enter the kitchen in search of some much-needed coffee.

“Morning,” I grumble, ignoring him as best I can while keeping my heavily made up cheek out of his sight. I didn’t sleep well last night. I just kept replaying everything in my mind. Last night was not the first time Anthony Conti has hit me. I’ve been on the receiving end of his violence, his aggression, before. He’s brutal when he wants to be. That’s no secret. But it hasn’t been like that in a while, and it caught me off guard.

I don’t know what that was about. Why did he show up in the first place?

That’s not his typical MO. I mean, sure, he’s come over to my apartment before. Many times even, but never like that. I don’t know what he’s after here, but I can guess. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that he wants Turner Hotels. That he wants to drive out Jake Turner and Maddox Sinclair, stick a proverbial flag in the ground and claim this land as his own.

But why? And why now? And why use me?

“Long night?” Morgan asks, a snicker in his voice. Peeking over at him, the suggestion of naughty doing is written all over his face. He thinks I was up all night fucking someone. Ha! If only.

“Nothing like that. I just didn’t sleep well.”

Morgan crosses the room, turning my face to his. His eyes turn to slits and I draw back, shifting away, attempting to hide what I know he’s already seen. His hand drops from my face and his fists clench. “Did Maddox do that?”

“What?” My eyes pop open wide, a bemused, humorless laugh crossing my lips. “No. Of course not. Why would you think it was him?”

“I don’t know. He seems like the possessive, unstable type. And he was a monster all day yesterday.”

I roll my eyes, going back to my coffee, hoping we could brush this whole thing off. “He’s not my boyfriend, Morgan. He’s my boss.”

“That’s not how it always looks.”

Honestly, I don’t know what he’s talking about. Most of our moments have been in private. When we’re in public, we’re nothing but professional with each other. I mean, yeah, Morgan saw that morning with Maddox and me in the kitchen, but nothing happened, and Maddox wasn’t even touching me. Other than that? I don’t know.

“Well, that’s how it is. Nothing is going on between me and Maddox.” He stares at me dubiously, folding his arms across his chest. “I swear,” I say indignantly. “Maddox is nothing but professional with me. It wasn’t him.”

“Then who was it?”

“Who’s to say it was someone at all? Maybe I fell.”

Morgan steps into my side, pressing his arm against mine. “That’s the line you can tell everyone else. But you and I both know someone hit you.” Morgan turns me back to him, his hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently as he tries to catch my eye. “I’m your friend, Isabel.
